Brief History

L.L. Cool J "Ladies Love Cool James" - James Todd Smith

LL Cool J was making some of his first demo tracks and tapes in 1985 that would later be received by Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons of Def Jam Recordings Inc. LL caught news of the making of a hip-hop movie called "Krush Groove," from one of his friends. Basically everyday LL would hang around the set getting into the movie as much as he could as a extra or whatever he could do. Then came his chance where he was allowed a part in the movie where he raps the first part of I Can't Live Without My Radio as a audition in the movie to Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons, who had both later on signed LL Cool J to a record contract. LL Cool J became one of the first artists on the Def Jam label, which at the time also included the Beastie Boys. For some more detail in the creation and story behind the start of Def Jam Records, I would recommend seeing the "Krush Groove" movie. Radio had been the album that introduced us to LL's style and showed us both the rough edge and love side to LL. Bigger & Deffer had established that LL was here to stay, and he wasn't about to take any trash talk from anyone. Walking With A Panther had been the album known as LL's wild and just having fun LP. Those albums helped spark off LL's music career, and in 1990 LL Cool J had first starring role in a movie, which was "The Hard Way." Which later on came to many roles in major motion pictures such as "Toys." The arrival of Mama Said Knock You Out showed the world what LL could do, established his presence as one of the greatest rapper's of all-time, and showed us a rough hard core song that goes on strong without evening using one swear word. This album also showed that LL was able to show a great variety of rapping styles and that his voice was not restricted to his songs. LL still continues to keep rockin' the bells, and making incredible music. LL has a starring role in the sitcom "In The House," which currently airs on UPN, and is still busy making hip-hop albums and taking acting roles in many major motion pictures. He is also to known to still have his beefs from no competition, no name rappers who think they know it all, which he will verbally battle in his tracks. Also he continues to support his home and friends with the Camp Cool J Foundation, and is currently backing a group of his old friends from Queens supporting the FUBU clothing brand which is owned and operated by his friends.

Discography

LL Cool J's first single was I Can't Live Without My Radio back in November of 1985 from the album "Radio", and instantly became an hit. Later on from the "Radio" album came Rock The Bells and I Need A Beat (remix). LL Cool J was only 16 and making some of the best rap music in history. The first platinum album for LL Cool J.

LL's second album "Bigger and Deffer" came the releases of I'm Bad and I Need Love around the end of 1987. Another platinum album makes it two.

The third album "Walking With A Panther" released around 1989 came Goin' Back To Cali, Jack The Ripper, Big Ole Butt, and the first version of Jinglin' Baby. Another platinum record!

LL Cool J's most heard of album and probaly best selling multi-platinum "Mama Said Knock You Out" was released towards the end of 1990. Featuring Jinglin' Baby (remix), The Boomin' System, Around The Way Girl, and Mama Said Knock You Out. I still think this LL Cool J's best album!

Then came "14 Shots To The Dome" the fifth album which came Back Seat and Pink Cookies In A Plastic Bag Gettin' Crushed By Buildings. This album also went platinum.

Now in November of 1995 came "Mr. Smith" LL Cool J's sixth platinum record. Which came Hey Lover, Doin' It, and Loungin' (Lp Mix). Which is still on the top of the charts! This album has gone multi-platinum!

"All World Greatest Hits", LL Cool J's greatest hits came out on November 5th, 1996. Featuring 16 of his best songs filling up the entire length (74 minutes) of the CD. This CD is cool and I recommend picking it up, especially if you like LL Cool J. The "All World" album includes the Loungin' (remix) not available on "Mr. Smith". Even if you just like one of his songs, there are more cool songs to discover on the "All World" album.

"Phenomenon", was released in November 1997 and is in LL words, a follow up to his first book, an autobiography of himself. The first single featured Phenomenon, the title track, then 4,3,2,1 followed afterwards, and the lastest single is currently Father. The album also features some tracks which have yet to be released as singles such as Hot, Hot, Hot.

The next LL Cool J album will be due out in late summer of 1998, and will feature production from Dr. Dre and DJ Premier to name a few. The style of the album from what I've heard will be a little more of the rougher hard songs, and also he'll be experimenting with some different styles of flows to maintain the variety in each of his tracks.
